PATTERN HACKS

Hack (v.)
To understand a pattern so well that you can change it with confidence.

In this program:

Students will learn repeatable pattern-hacking techniques that allow them to transform silhouettes, details, and proportions—without drafting from scratch.

Requirements: This is an advanced program. Experience with commercial patterns is recommended.

Tools: all tools will be provided, but if you wish to bring your own we will be using grid rulers, french curve and a hip curve.

Let’s get into it:

  • Anatomy of a pattern

  • Vocabulary: style lines, grainline, notches, structural seams, ease, etc.

  • Sleeve & neckline variations

  • Volume control

  • Lengthen/shorten

  • Adding panels

  • Slash and spread method

  • MIXING 2 PATTERNS

  • Adding facings

You are welcome to bring patterns you want to hack. There is a set curriculum, but I would love to hear your questions and, time permitting, we will go over them.
