A DRESS CLASS

Why This Dress?

This dress is more than just a beautiful garment — it’s a perfect learning project! It features princess seams, one of the best techniques for achieving a clean, flattering fit. If you’ve ever struggled with fitting garments properly, this dress is designed to solve those challenges.

Why princess seams?
Princess seams run smoothly over the bust and down the body, creating natural shaping without bulky darts. They’re ideal for beginners who want to understand how garments are shaped to fit the body — and they’re a fantastic introduction to fitting adjustments.

In this class, you’ll learn:

  • How to read and understand a sewing pattern

  • The meaning behind pattern markings and symbols

  • Cutting fabric accurately for better results

  • Fitting techniques using princess seams

  • How to incorporate linings and sleeves to finish your dress professionally

By the end of this course, you’ll not only have a beautiful dress — you’ll have built essential skills you can apply to many future projects!

Preparing for This Class

When you sign up for this class, you’ll receive a dress pattern and instructions to guide you through each step of the project.

Before class:

  • Choose your size:
Once you book, you’ll need to select your size based on our measuring chart (provided upon registration). This will ensure your pattern is ready for you when you arrive.

What to bring:

  • Fabric:
You’ll need to bring your own fabric. Recommended fabrics include mid-weight woven fabrics with some body, such as: Mid-weight linen, Cotton, Cotton poplin, Linen-cotton blends, Linen-viscose blends

  • Lining fabric:
Bring the same amount of lining as your main fabric.

  • Notions:

    • 17" invisible or regular zipper

    • Hook and eye closure

What we provide:

  • Interfacing

  • All basic sewing supplies

  • Sewing machines available upon request (or you’re welcome to bring your own!)

**IMPORTANT**

This class includes homework. You may be asked to finish cutting your fabric out at home or sew some parts of the garment. For example: we will sew the outer fabric in class and you will be asked to sew the same parts of the lining at home.

Follow this size chart to determine which size will you need. Chart also includes amounts of fabric (and lining) needed for this project.

Use this chart for sleeves fabric amounts and sizing.
